EPIC Leader 1:1

A practical framework for turning routine 1:1 meetings into meaningful conversations that build trust, create alignment, and support growth.

A 1:1 meeting is not a status update. It is one of the clearest ways a leader demonstrates whether they are invested in the people they lead, or just the output those people produce.

People don't feel valued because a leader says they matter. They feel valued because a leader makes time for them. Every leader says their people matter. The calendar is where people decide whether that's true.

This tool maps a compass-aligned conversation framework onto the structure of a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly 1:1. Each section corresponds to a bearing on the EPIC Compass, and each one asks something specific of both the leader and the person across the table.

The question underneath all four sections is the same: what did I learn that I didn't know before? If the answer is nothing, the conversation didn't go deep enough.

EPIC Leader 1:1 meeting framework organized around the EPIC Compass. Questions explore Purpose, Integrity, Courage, and Empathy, with a central Humility reflection asking: “What did I learn that I didn’t know before?”

The questions on the tool are starting points, not stopping points. Each one is designed to open a door. What happens next depends on what the leader hears, and whether they're willing to follow the answer wherever it leads. The best 1:1 conversations don't follow a script. They follow the person.

Save it. Use it. See what changes.
